Seven Summer Skincare Hacks

men's skincare routine

Your wardrobe isn’t the only thing that needs a little tweaking as the temperature rises. Here are seven tips and tricks to keep your skincare game on point this summer too.

Exfoliate regularly

No matter your skin type, you produce more oil in the summer. More oil means more build-up of bacteria and dead skin cells in your pores. This can lead to a host of skincare issues like breakouts, blackheads, and ingrown hairs to name a few. Exfoliating with hydroxy acid toner or a physical scrub will help to keep your skin clear and breakout free. Regular exfoliation will also help to decrease signs of aging because it speeds up your skin-cell turnover process.

Lighten up your moisturizer

Heavy moisturizers and summer are like orange juice and toothpaste—not a good match. Using a lightweight moisturizer that’s non-comedogenic (that means it won’t clog your pores) will go a long way in keeping your skin healthy and comfortable this season.

Keep your eye cream in the refrigerator

This one may seem a little out there but a chilled eye cream will constrict your blood vessels—helping to decrease puffiness and dark circles. While you can use this hack year-round, it’s especially refreshing in the summer. As an added bonus, keeping your eye cream in the fridge might also increase its shelf life.

Cool down your shower

Hot water is bad for your skin because it destroys the natural protective barrier that keeps bacteria out of your pores. While taking cool or lukewarm showers in the winter can be hard (that steamy shower just feels so good), it’s worth trying in the summer. You’ll instantly notice a difference and your skin will thank you.

Don’t skip SPF

This goes for the winter too (damaging UVA rays aren’t weaker in the winter) but we all tend to spend more time outside in the summer so it’s especially important now. A good SPF moisturizer has the power to block the signs of aging by 90%, but using the right one will also help to minimize breakouts, decrease redness, and hydrate.

Use a hydrating serum

This might sound more like a winter hack, but your skin can easily become dehydrated in the summer too. Dehydrated skin looks dry, dull, and is more easily prone to breakouts. While drinking plenty of water helps, using a hydrating serum is better. The best hydrating serums are formulated with an ingredient called Hyaluronic Acid, this powerhouse molecule has the ability to draw moisture from the hair around you and hold 1000x its weight in water. Better yet, because it quenches with water (not oil) it won’t make your skin feel heavy or look shiny.

Try a powerful anti-ager

In the summer, increased moisture makes your skin stronger. That means now is a great time to try more powerful ingredients like retinol. While retinol can often cause irritation for those who are dry or sensitive, your skin is much more likely to stand up to this powerful anti-ager in the summer. Start now so your skin can adjust and begin reaping the benefits before winter comes back around.
